Ethan and Mark,
I recently heard this fantastic Lied by Schubert. I found it especially beautiful, because it's all in Deutsch. Just to give you a bit of understanding--it's about a sick son, his father and Der Erlkoenig (I'll leave him up to your imagination!) I couldn't post just the song, but I found this awesome rendition with video. See if you like it. (The words are below it. Read them as you listen to the music (don't get ahead of the music or it spoils everything)--it is profoundly moving and makes me wish that I sang...but I would settle for being able to play the piano accompaniment)
Your music lovin' Mama
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
"Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?" —
"Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif?" —
"Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif."
"Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;
Manch' bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand." —
"Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?" —
"Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind." —
"Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehen?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
"Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
"Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt faßt er mich an!
Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan!" —
Dem Vater grauset's, er reitet geschwind,
Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
Erreicht den Hof mit Müh' und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
Haha I've actually already heard that song twice; once when we listened to it in Germany with Herr Kloeckner, and then just this past semester when we discussed it in my Understanding Music class. It's a beautiful piece and I would LOVE to sing it ;-)
ReplyDeleteGlad to know that mein Sohn is academically more advanced in German Lieder than his mother who majored in music in college. Gulp...
ReplyDeleteSorry...But I do think going to German school definitely helped haha
ReplyDeleteI love this song, it has all the things I like in music, a language I know, awesome piano playing that reminds me of Aris, a scary flight through a dark forest, a tree spirit and his daughters and the melancholy sadness like an Edgar Allen Poe story.
